Let’s go back to the late 1980’s, you know right after I was born, to when this classic song was poppin’. What I love about this song is that it always puts me in a good mood no matter what. Its beat is so uplifting & I personally believe that the lyrics “I’m so in love with you, I’ll be forever blue” are some of the most brilliant words ever grouped together. “A Little Respect” came from Erasure’s 3rd album The Innocents & apparently Erasure is currently back in the studio working on an album - good for them!
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - Home (RAC Remix)
Yes, yes, yes! Sometimes a song can be such a rare find that you feel like you’ve discovered treasure & that’s how I feel with the RAC remix of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros’ “Home”. It’s the Juno soundtrack meets Johnny Cash meets Peter, Björn And John (mainly because of the whistling). This song has such a unique sound that it’s hard not to appreciate it solely for that. It’s so much more than that though - they seem to have created an entirely new musical environment around this one song, an environment that I’m completely in love with right now. It’s hard to even categorize it & so I’ll put it in the awesome category & highly recommend you give it a listen. Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros is an ensemble band & “Home” is from their first full length album Up from Below.
Chiddy Bang is officially 2 for 2 if anyone is counting. Last week I posted their song “Breakfast” where they sample Kate Nash’s song “Skeleton” & now this week I’m really enjoying “Hey London”. I feel like the formula for a good rap/hip hop song is not that difficult to master & Chiddy Bang seems to understand that. They mix great “rhymes”, an addictive beat, & a catchy chorus & it works. One more song by them & I’m officially a fan! Who’s got a good one? Send it to me!
Christian Falk feat. Robyn - Dream On (Wez Clarke Remix)
So the great thing about my music blog is that I post whatever I love at the moment whether it’s new or old, popular or unpopular - doesn’t matter. If the song has the ability to create sensations in my brain then you are going to hear about it. And that’s where today’s song comes in. I love Robyn, I adore her, & I am such a fan. Why hadn’t I heard Christian Falk’s “Dream On” until now? It’s from his 2006 album People Say & this particular remix of the song is just incredible. The build throughout it is perfectly done & I think Robyn contributes a lot to that with her vocals - she’s really good at doing that. Anyway, this is the song I was supposed to post about last week when I stumbled upon her brand new single & fell in love instantly. So the point of this post is - if you don’t already love Robyn, show her love. And show Christian Falk some love too. Thanks Chris!
I’m initially loving this song - I think I’m loving that B.o.B., aka Bobby Ray Simmons, samples the beautiful Coldplay song “Lost”. I’ll know after a few more listens whether the song is actually good or not. Although I must say I am getting really sick of J.R. Rotem’s “signature” horns in his songs - they make it sound so ameteur. B.o.B. is a rapper from Atlanta Georgia who’s current single “Nothin On You” sits atop the Billboard Hot 100, which is not an easy feat. His debut album, B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray, drops tomorrow April 27, 2010. What do you think of the rapper B.o.B.?
Flashback Friday: Mariah Carey vs Fragma - We Belong Miracle
The first time I heard this song, I thought I had died & gone to musical heaven. One of the best remixes of all time & one of the most genius mash-ups ever. The mash-up consists of Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” & Fragma’s “Toca’s Miracle”. It’s always good & it never gets old. Whether you’ve heard it before or it’s your first time hearing it, throw it on your playlist & listen to it while you get ready for whatever tonight’s plans are. Have a great weekend everyone!
"Cause I didn’t know you, cause I didn’t know me, but I thought I knew everything I never felt."
I’m really digging this song & it’s mostly because it’s really really chill. It’s difficult to make a really good chill song because it’s either slightly overdone or slightly not done enough. I love the combination of vocals in the song - it’s kind of ghetto, but at the same time not so much. Then the chorus comes in & takes the song to a whole new level - has sort of that Cut Copy “Feel The Love” or Peter, Björn & John “Young Folks” feel. And it kind of even reminds me of Snoop Dogg’s “Sexual Seduction”, oddly enough. Blue Scholars is a hip hop duo from Seattle that have apparently been around for a while now - news to me. If you’re familiar with their music & have any other suggestions, let me know! What do you think about Blue Scholars?
Dragonette - Pick Up The Phone (Speedy Graffitis Light Remix)
This is the second song by Dragonette that I’ve been impressed with & so one more & I’m a certified fan. While I didn’t love this song after the first listen like I did with yesterday with Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” (which I have not stopped listening to by the way), it has grown on me over the past few weeks. There’s something so strangely unique about Martina Sorbara’s voice that seems to pull me into every song I hear by them. Since it is a remix, part of the credit goes to Speedy Graffitis, who I’m not familiar with, & so if you know anything about this DJ please post a comment.
You guys… ONE LISTEN! One listen & I fell in love. That RARELY happens. And all it took was Robyn & Kleerup to do it. This wasn’t even the song I originally intended to post for today, but after one listen - how could I not? This is what I call beauty at it’s best. The lyrics?!? The instrumentals?!? I’m just so fascinated with this song right now, I should probably stop typing before I say something I regret later on. Robyn is dropping the first of THREE new albums this June - Body Talk Pt 1. You must give this song a listen. Why not? What do you have to lose? Welcome back Robyn, it’s so good to hear from you again!
DJ DoYou - Can You Feel The Best I Ever Had (Timon vs Drake)
If you love Disney music, you will appreciate this mash-up. It’s another song I put on my ipod to read to & the next thing I know, I’m singing out loud in public & I don’t even care. The mash-up mashes “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” from “The Lion King” with Drake’s “Best I Ever Had” & it’s kind of amazing. You might think it’s kind of weird the first couple of listens, but by the 4th or 5th you’ll find yourself popping “The Lion King” into the VHS, er I mean DVD player - that is if you own the movie on DVD. What do you think of the mash-up? Worth a listen or are you over these mash-ups? Happy Friday!
This is a very interesting listen. The song samples Kate Nash’s song “Skeleton Song” & let’s face it - you can’t really go wrong with the tremendously talented Kate Nash. And I have to say that the sound of Chiddy Bang is pretty impressive. “Skeleton” comes from Chiddy Bang’s mini mixtape, Air Swell, which is available to download for free on their Myspace. Chiddy Bang is a Philly based duo comprised of Chiddy & Xaphoon Jones. They’re doing exactly what they should be doing at this early stage in their career - taking an already semi-popular song & making it their own.
I love this group so so much. “Love of an Orchestra” is the second song I’ve posted from their album, The First Days of Spring. It’s a little bit more upbeat than the previous song I posted. I can’t say enough great things about their album & so I’m just going to encourage you to download it & hear for yourselves the amazingness that is Noah & the Whale. Trust me. And if you do decide to download, please give me your feedback.
Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Bittersweet (Freemasons Mix)
Just like a Kimberly Locke song, this one was custom made for the gays. Call me a new fan, but I’ve never really given Sophie the time of day musically until this song & I am happy I finally did it. It was just a matter of right place, right time & now I’m a newborn fan. I’m not blown away, but I am intrigued & am definitely up for hearing more. And besides, it’s a freemasons mix - those guys usually get it right. “Bittersweet” is the lead single from Sophie’s 4th studio album, Straight To The Heart, due out this July. Enjoy! Thanks Basil!
Ok so this song comes from Royksopp’s 2009 album Junior - and I know what you’re thinking: “Ryan, that’s SO old!” Whatever, get over it. Sometimes what I do is download an album & delete the songs I initially don’t like due to lack of disk space. “Forever” was deleted due to it’s lack of lyrics. Somehow or another, it reappeared on my playlist & I used it as a song to workout & read to. Song lyrics distract me from reading & I need music to work out & so lyricless music is the perfect solution. Well, as I’m sitting there reading I find myself slowly, but surely getting more & more energetic about my work out & it’s because of what happens right around 3:15/3:16 part of this song. So, long story short - I think it’s beautiful! What do you think? Ryksopp has a new album coming out later this year called Senior. Can’t wait!
My best source for really good music sent me this jam & while I didn’t initially LOVE it, it’s definitely grown on me a great deal over the past few weeks. I think this particular song, “Seven”, reminds me of another song & I can’t seem to put my finger on it. Maybe it’s that Chew Lips sounds to me like a combination of a few different artists - La Roux, Robyn, & Groove Armada - but, slowed down a bit. And that’s not a bad thing at all. But yeah, I’m liking it - how about you? Chew Lips is a dance-pop trio from South London & are apparently being featured on many “ones to watch” lists for this year. Thank you Cody!
I’ve been wanting to post this for a couple of weeks, but it was IMPOSSIBLE to find an HQ version for you. And so I just had to go and make my own. Now I like this song for a number of reasons. It has the most perfect time length - it’s not too short & it’s not too long, it’s just right. I like the sound of Pendelum - very Chad Kroeger from Nickelback. It’s a little bit dance & a little bit radio-friendly rock. “Watercolour” is the lead single from the Australian band’s third album, Immersion, which will be out on May 24th. Deadmau5 is the brilliant Canadian producer responsible for this mix.
I don’t get this song. I’ve given it a week worth of listening & I can’t decide whether I like it or not. I’m leaning more towards not liking it. I almost feel as if I’m trying to force myself to like it just because it’s Christina. I kind of wish she would be more of herself tonight because I like the songs she releases a lot more when she’s herself. There’s a 15% chance this song could grow on me, but as of now I just think it’s pretty lackluster. You gotta step up your game girl. “Not Myself Tonight” is the lead single from Christina’s upcoming album Bionic, which will be released June 8th & hopefully have some better songs on it. What do you think? It’ll be interesting to see how the song does on the radio & whether her fan base can make it a success or not.
